The English Department at York University engages in research and teaching in ways that are true to the spirit of interdisciplinary, creative, and politically engaged inquiry that has long been central to York University’s mission. Our faculty's ground-breaking research and creative works have taken many forms, including novels, works of literary criticism, edited anthologies, public lectures, documentary films, and poems. We offer a wide range of courses providing training in the fundamentals of reading and writing about literature, and introduce students to various theoretical approaches, literary genres and national literatures. Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need to understand, appreciate and discuss forms of literary expression across historical and national boundaries, while giving them the freedom and encouragement to pursue their particular interests.
