Our department offers undergraduate programs in GermanScandinavian, and Dutch and a graduate program in German Studies. In teaching and research, we emphasize the embededdness of language, literature, and the arts in larger social, cultural, and political processes. Our approach, widely known as the “Michigan Model,” has made us one of the premier departments in the US and is unmatched in its interdisciplinary breadth. Students are guided by faculty with deep methodic training and experience in German, Dutch and Scandinavian languages and literature, Comparative Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology, Film Studies, Philosophy, Media Studies, Museum Studies, and Music.
