Visiting Assistant Professorship in Journalism and Communication Arts

The Departments of English and Performance and Communication Arts at St. Lawrence University seek applicants for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Journalism and Communication Arts for the 2020-2021 academic year. Experience teaching introduction to journalism (print and digital), introduction to communication studies, and advising an undergraduate campus newspaper are required. Significant reporting and editorial experience preferred. Our departments are committed to building a diverse and inclusive educational environment. Essential Functions: Teach five (5) courses per academic year. The teaching load will include introductory journalism writing, introduction to communications, and advising the St. Lawrence University student newspaper, The Hill News, on content, design, and publication. Journalism classes enroll approximately 16 students and are typically run as seminars; Introduction to Communications sections enroll 16 students.

The Hill News is an award-winning student-run newspaper published weekly. The staff of The Hill News is comprised of students from many majors, but Introduction to Journalism is a primary feeder for the paper’s news stories and features.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D/ABD in English, Communications, or related field, or MFA in Creative Writing; experience teaching journalism and communications to undergraduates; demonstrated success in advising a student-run newspaper; demonstrated excellence in teaching. The English and Performance and Communication Arts departments also seek evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods and/or pedagogies that engage broadly diverse student populations.
