Assistant Professor of Medieval Literature

The Department of English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Medieval Literature. Appointment to begin in Fall 2020.

Position

We invite applications for a tenure-track position in Medieval literature with a secondary teaching expertise in Early Modern literature. Scholars with comparative or transnational approaches, or theoretical interests in race, gender, sexuality, or disability studies are especially encouraged to apply. The appointee will be expected to teach a range of courses in all areas of the English and Comparative Literature majors, at the upper-division and graduate (M.A.) levels, as well as lower-division, introductory, and general education courses. Of particular importance will be the ability to teach Chaucer, Shakespeare, and British literature survey courses, along with advanced studies in medieval literature in English and transnational perspectives. Faculty generally teach 3 classes per semester. A reduced teaching load is provided for the first two years. Evidence of an active research program and high-quality teaching is required.

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The person in this position will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field is required by August 2020
    •  ABDs must show evidence of degree completion prior to appointment
  • Specialization in Medieval Literature
  • Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Evidence of successful, high-quality teaching
  • Active research program with demonstrated evidence of, or clear potential for, high-quality peer-reviewed publication
  • Potential for collegial participation in departmental, campus, and disciplinary communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including first‐generation college students
  • Demonstrated contributions to diversity through research, teaching, and service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secondary specialization in Early Modern Literature

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
