Tenured/Untenured Director, Expository Writing Program

Johns Hopkins University seeks to hire the Director of its Expository Writing Program, housed in the English department. A joint appointment in a department related to the candidate’s expertise, if outside English literary studies, may also be possible. The successful candidate will have with a strong background in rhetoric [and rhetorical theory], with fluency in writing and pedagogy. The candidate's fields of research may include minority cultures, indigenous traditions, or diaspora and global community. In addition, the new Director will be able and willing to engage in program building and the elaboration of curricular issues as they pertain to writing in the sciences.  The appointment will be at the rank of Senior Teaching or Tenured Associate or Full Professor, commensurate with experience, achievement, and publication record.

In its current configuration, the Expository Writing Program at Johns Hopkins is an established, highly effective freshman course with an enrollment of nearly half of all (1300+) entering JHU undergraduates.  The pedagogy is state-of-the art, the faculty includes a stable team of devoted and skilled lecturers, along with advanced doctoral students in English.  The two existing courses are small seminars offering intensive study of the art of mounting a persuasive scholarly argument.  

The program is outgrowing its capacity, and the new Director will have the opportunity to innovate its nature and scope.  We seek a Director who will broaden the program’s reach across all departments and disciplines, putting writing at the heart of undergraduate learning.

 

Qualifications

Serious candidates for the position should have:

*A Ph.D.  or M.F.A. in a relevant field
*Experience in managing a large program and training teachers
*A commitment to writing and to the teaching of writing
*A well-articulated and compelling vision of the role of writing in various disciplines, and for various and diverse populations
