Assistant Professor - Technical Communication

The Technical Communication faculty in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts on the Polytechnic Campus at Arizona State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in technical communication.  We welcome applications from candidates with any specialization within technical communication, but applications that demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas will be of particular interest: data visualization/analysis, social media, health communication/medical rhetoric, content strategy/authoring, or digital media. Expectations for this position include: teach undergraduate and graduate courses, engage in research applicable to our field, provide innovative teaching experiences, advise students, and provide service to the unit, college, and university.

Teaching load is typically two (2) courses per semester.  Course load and composition is determined by the faculty head.  This is an academic-year 2020-2021 appointment with an expected start date of August 16, 2020. The Assistant Professor position is a benefits-eligible appointment with tenure implications.  Salary is competitive to commensurate with experience. The technical communication program is home to vibrant and innovative scholars, teachers, and students.  We value the freedom to work interdisciplinarily with faculty throughout the university in a wide range of research areas that help advance the knowledge of students and practitioners and improve the lives of users.  We value the intellectual collaborations we have cultivated with other units at ASU, including the School of Sustainability, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, WP Carey School of Business, and the Fulton School of Engineering, with whom we co-administer an MS in User Experience.  The technical communication program houses the CRUX lab, where faculty and students engage in impactful communication and UX research using state-of-the-art resources, such as a Tobii eyetracking system. Required Qualifications:

  • An earned terminal degree in technical communication or related field at the time of appointment
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • Commitment to meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities
  • Strong evidence of the promise of scholarly research and publications

Desired Qualifications:

  • A record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Scholarly trajectory that considers the economic, social, cultural, and/or overall health of the communities it serves
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment and across disciplines
  • Two (2) or more years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level
  • Evidence teaching on-line and in-person
  • Experience using course management systems such as Canvas
  • Interest in establishing relationships with industry partners
  • Interest in securing external research funding
