Tenure Track Assistant Professor position of pre-19th-century French and Iberian (Spanish and/or Portuguese)

European Studies and Spanish & Portuguese Departments (joint position), San Diego State University

 

The Departments of European Studies and of Spanish & Portuguese at San Diego State University invite applications for a tenure track assistant professor joint position in French and in Spanish and/or Portuguese, to start in August 2020. Research specialization in pre-19th-century studies with preferred expertise in women/gender, sexuality/LGBTQ studies, and/or race/colonialism. We seek a dynamic colleague who can complement, strengthen, and expand the competencies of our departments and contribute to fostering innovative collaborations with faculty in the College of Arts and Letters and other units on campus.

 

Required qualifications/criteria:

  • PhD in hand by June 2020 in an appropriate field
  • Native or near-native fluency in French as well as in Spanish and/or Portuguese, and excellent knowledge of English
  • Strong research program with evidence of participation in professional growth activities consistent with experience in the field
  • Ability and willingness to teach courses in French as well as in Spanish and/or Portuguese at all levels of the curriculum
  • Ability and willingness to engage actively in departmental and university service
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds at a Hispanic-Serving Institution

 

Desirable qualifications/criteria:

  • Teaching experience in the U.S. university system
  • Ability and willingness to teach medieval to 18th-century topics in undergraduate and graduate courses in French as well as in Spanish (and/or undergraduate courses in Portuguese)
  • Ability and willingness to serve as undergraduate advisor
  • Ability to contribute to undergraduate and graduate program revision and to develop innovative interdisciplinary courses
