Visiting Assistant Professor in Poetry, Poetics and the Environment

We seek a broadly trained scholar for a one-year position in twentieth- and twenty-first century poetry and environmental humanities to collaborate with colleagues across the College who are working in issues of environmental and social justice. The candidate will offer courses supportive of the department’s majors and our interdisciplinary commitment to environmental humanities. The candidate would teach twentieth- and twenty-first-century poetry and poetic theory as the necessary literary historical complement to our creative writing program. The candidate could expect as well to teach core courses in the English department, to contribute to the college’s needs through W1  (writing intensive) and L (literature requirement) courses. We welcome candidates with broad comparative training, including work in transatlantic or comparative literatures. A secondary field in new media or digital humanities would be desirable.

Colby was the first college in the country to achieve carbon neutrality, and we have received numerous awards for sustainability. This commitment to environmental justice extends to the academic programs, and the English department has been a leader in Environmental Humanities. Supported by a major grant from the Mellon Foundation the College is developing a campus-wide transdisciplinary initiative in EH. Please see our website at http://www.colby.edu/centerartshumanities/environmental-humanities. Many Colby students double major in Environmental Studies and English, and English department courses in Environmental Humanities attract students from across the College.  We have, in addition, a very strong creative writing program which contributes to a lively intellectual climate.

We support a wide array of lectures, faculty work-in-progress seminars, and readings, and we foster both student and faculty research through grants and off-campus opportunities.
