Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of English with specialization in Indigenous or Postcolonial literature to begin 2022-23.

Expertise in Black Indigeneity; global Anglophone literatures; or indigenous traditions of Africa, Oceania, or the Americas is especially welcome. Additionally, the successful candidate will have opportunities to teach courses on a variety of topics, potentially including creative writing, as well as within affiliated interdisciplinary programs and university-wide cohorts, including the Native American Cohort; Africana Studies; Latin American and Caribbean Studies; Poverty and Human Capability Studies; Law, Justice and Society; Middle East and South Asia Studies; Environmental Studies; Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Film and Visual Culture; and Digital Culture and Information.

W&L is ranked in the top ten national liberal arts institutions and English is one of the largest departments in the College. The department mentors a very active group of talented majors and creative writing minors, teaching the majority of undergraduate students in writing classes capped at 15, and literature classes capped at 20. We are committed to the development of an inclusive environment and strive to advance diverse perspectives and approaches within the department and its curriculum.

This tenure-track position includes 5.5 courses across two twelve-week semesters plus a four-week May term. One of these courses will be a first-year writing seminar taught within the Writing Program. The other four courses are in literature at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. Support for research includes conference funding, summer research funding, and pre-tenure leave, as well as opportunities to present to faculty cohorts and programs on campus; teaching support is available through university-wide workshops.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

 

Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate a sustained commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarly research. The department seeks candidates committed to working with diverse student and community populations; applicants are encouraged to describe in their letter of application how their research, teaching and service interests contribute to diverse communities. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in English  or foreign equivalent, conferred by the start of the appointment.
