Tenure-track Assistant Professor of English with a specialization in Ecocriticism and Social Justice

The Department of English at Colby College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ecocriticism and Social Justice, to begin in fall 2022. We seek a passionate teacher and scholar to help us launch our new Concentration in Literature and the Environment. The candidate will join a thriving English Department and offer courses supportive of the College’s emphasis on environmental humanities. The candidate will co-teach the Environmental Studies core course, Environment and Society, as well as contributing core courses in the new English major Concentration in Literature and the Environment. A secondary emphasis in poetics is desirable.

The English Department at Colby is unusual among liberal arts colleges in offering majors in English, in English with a concentration in Literature and the Environment, and in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Many students from across campus also minor in English or in Creative Writing. We support a lively array of lectures, faculty work-in-progress seminars, and readings, and we foster both student and faculty research through grants and off-campus opportunities. Our work in Literature and the Environment supports students across the College who are interested in environmental issues and in social justice.

For this position we seek a teacher-scholar with demonstrated teaching excellence and strong  record of research. Teaching will include first-year writing and departmental core courses, including those in the Concentration and either Foundations of Literary Study (introduction for majors) or Literary Theory. Candidates can expect to teach courses in their field of specialization at advanced levels and to supervise honors theses in their field. PhD must be in hand no later than August 2022.

Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and close student-faculty interaction. We are especially interested in candidates who, through their scholarship, teaching and service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the campus community.
