Associate Professorship in American Literature

The Faculty of English and Exeter College (part of the University of Oxford) are recruiting an Associate Professor in American Literature to start from 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.  This is a joint appointment: the person appointed to the Associate Professorship will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at Exeter College, and will be a trustee and member of its Governing Body.  The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.

We welcome applications from individuals with research expertise in post-1945 American literature in English, with a strong preference for candidates with research and teaching interests in African American literature and/or other minority ethnic literatures of the Americas. The successful candidate will hold (or be close to completion of) a doctorate in English or a closely related subject.

The main duties of the post are to:

  • carry out research at an international level;
  • participate in the administration of the Faculty, and the administration and governance of the College;
  • participate fully in Admissions and Outreach activities; and
  • teach, supervise, and examine undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Further particulars, which include details of the application procedure, can be obtained from the University website (https://www.jobs.ox.ac.uk/) or from the HR Manager at Exeter College (vacancies@exeter.ox.ac.uk).

The combined University and College salary will be within a range £48,835 - £65,574 per annum, plus additional College pensionable benefits (including a Housing Allowance (£9,193 p.a.)). An allowance of £2,846 p.a.  would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.

The closing date for applications is midday (GMT) on Wednesday 12 January 2022.  Interviews will be held on both 3 & 4 March 2022 in Oxford.
