The Department of English at the University of Delaware invites applications for a Continuing Track Assistant Professor in TESOL, Rhetoric and Composition with ESL expertise, or Applied Linguistics for Second Language acquisition. We are looking for a specialist who will play a central role in teaching ESL/multilingual students in the university’s first-year writing course (capped for these sections at 15 students) as well as teaching and planning advanced writing courses. The candidate will mentor and train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to teach second-language learners, and will plan, lead, and manage partnerships across campus to address ESL student needs. We prefer that candidates hold either a PhD in Composition & Rhetoric, Applied Linguistics, TESOL or a related field with a strong background in teaching first-year composition to ESL students. Successful candidates will be prepared not only to teach our first-year composition course, but also to help create programming across campus to support the teaching of writing for undergraduate and graduate ESL students. The English Department has a strong record of leadership in teaching, professional engagement, and service, with an established commitment to developing and supporting curricular, student, and faculty diversity.
 
The English Department is a dynamic, collegial collection of scholars and teachers devoted to conducting interdisciplinary research and teaching the study of English in ways that are inclusive, relevant, and meaningful to communities beyond the university. We include diverse areas of study such as, Composition & Rhetoric, Literary and Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, Drama, Film, and Critical Race Studies. And our faculty play leading roles in various interdisciplinary programs, including Environmental Humanities, Disability Studies, Material Culture Studies, Digital Humanities, and Journalism. In addition to the English major and several interdisciplinary minors, we offer a strong English Education major that prepares students to be NCATE-certified secondary education teachers of English. We offer two 4+1 programs as well that allow English majors to earn a BA in English followed by an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language, or an MA/MPA in public policy/public administration. Our faculty are given strong support to develop educational opportunities that engage our students within and beyond the classroom.
