Environmental Humanities - Tenure Track Assistant Professor

We seek a candidate trained in Literature and the Environment to teach the introduction to Environmental Humanities; to team teach (in rotation) with Environmental Studies faculty the introduction to ES; to offer a sequence of upper level courses in EH in the English Department; and to contribute to the department’s W1 (first-year writing) offering and to its core courses, including Critical Theory. We prefer a specialist in Literature and the Environment who can teach interdisciplinary courses based in modern and contemporary literature and theory. Secondary areas might include digital humanities and the environment; law and literature; public humanities; or literature and environmental justice globally conceived.

Colby was the first college in the country to achieve carbon neutrality, and we have received numerous awards for sustainability. This commitment to environmental justice extends to the academic programs, and the English department has been a leader in Environmental Humanities. Supported by a major grant from the Mellon Foundation the College is developing a campus-wide transdisciplinary initiative in EH. We support a wide array of lectures, faculty work-in-progress seminars, and readings, and we foster both student and faculty research through grants and off-campus opportunities.
