Assistant Professor of German

The Williams College Department of German & Russian is excited to invite applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of German, beginning Fall 2023. The successful candidate will join a growing, dynamic program that is committed to inclusive and anti-racist pedagogy, to decolonizing and expanding the field of German Studies, and to working across disciplines. Specialization is open, with a particular interest in candidates who work in the areas of migration, race and anti-racism, post- and decolonial approaches, disability, and/or memory studies. Excellence in language teaching is a prerequisite, as is a genuine interest in undergraduate education in the Liberal Arts. The department is looking for candidates with an interdisciplinary, intermedial, and/or comparative research agenda. Members of the German and Russian department regularly collaborate with other programs and departments such as Comparative Literature, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Environmental Studies, Africana Studies, and Art History, among others.

Consideration of applications will begin on December 1, 2022. Preliminary interviews will be held via Zoom in mid-January, and selected candidates will be invited for on-campus interviews in the second and third weeks of February, 2023. For initial application, please submit a cover letter, a CV, and three letters of recommendation. A writing sample and other teaching related materials will be requested from those who advance to the latter stages of the search process. The Williams College Department of German and Russian is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusion of the academic community through their research, teaching, mentoring, and service. We strongly encourage applications from members of historically under-represented groups in the humanities in general and in German Studies in particular, as well as individuals who have experience with diverse student populations. Applicants are invited to note specific knowledge, experience, and abilities related to building a diverse educational environment in their cover letter.
