Assistant Professor of African American Literature, pre-1900


The Department of English at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2020. Qualified applicants will specialize in African American literature prior to 1900. We seek a scholar with a promising record of scholarship and teaching. Expertise in the literary texts and cultural practices of African Americans in any period from the beginning of European colonialism in the Americas through the end of the 19th century is required. Secondary areas of specialization are open, and all methods are invited. The successful candidate will join a faculty with expertise in American, Afro-Caribbean, and other Black/African diasporic literatures and cultures in the 20th and 21st centuries. Scholars with experience teaching and mentoring students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Letters of application should address how the candidate's research, teaching, and service will contribute to the University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This faculty position is a full-time, nine-month appointment with a standard teaching assignment of two courses per semester. Faculty teach a balance of courses for undergraduate majors, graduate students, and non-majors completing OU's General Education requirements. The Department of English offers PhD and terminal MA degrees in Literary & Cultural Studies (LCS) and Rhetoric & Writing Studies (RWS).

Required qualifications include a PhD in English, African American Studies, or an allied field by an August 2020 start date.
