Assistant Professor in Early Modern Literature

The English Department of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications from scholars working at the intersections of race, empire, and British/transatlantic literature during the early modern period. Related research fields might include (but are not limited to) media studies, the history of gender and sexuality, trans-reformation studies, poetics, drama and performance, history and philosophy of science, or environmental studies. Highly desirable are candidates who offer evidence of and/or proposals for innovative undergraduate teaching and who plan to contribute substantially to one or more of our four focal areas for graduate student research: “Race, Poetics, Empire,” “Genealogies of Modernity,” “Media and Material Practices,” and “Children’s Literature and Childhood Studies.”

The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenure-stream Assistant Professor to start in August of 2020. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand by the start of the appointment. The normal teaching load is 2/2. The University of Pittsburgh offers many opportunities for collaborative research as well as internal fellowships and grants from entities such as the Humanities Center and the interdisciplinary Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program. We are members of the Newberry Library’s Renaissance Studies Consortium, which has reciprocal privileges with the Folger Institute.
