Associate/Full Professor, Rhetoric

The Department of English Language and Literature seeks to hire a tenured associate or full professor whose research bridges the history of the English language, rhetoric, and the teaching of writing, bringing historical or theoretical approaches to these core fields of inquiry in English studies.

This is a research appointment, but part of the motivation for making it is to provide intellectual depth and direction to the teaching of writing at Yale.  The teaching of writing, from introductory to advanced levels, including expository, creative, and critical forms, is located within the English department at Yale; it is integral to the work of the department and comprises an important part of our graduate training. We do not seek a course or program administrator, though such experience may be valuable.  In building scholarly excellence in the field, we wish to bring conceptual and historical perspective to the teaching of writing and strengthen its connections to the research program of the department.

We welcome candidates with established interests in linguistics, the history and politics of English, and the pedagogy of writing. Topics of interest might include, but are not limited to, such subjects as:  gender in language and composition; histories of political rhetoric; writing and democracy; the cultural and institutional history of writing pedagogies; ethnic, immigrant, and global Englishes; multilingualism and code-switching; the study of rhetoric as it relates to literary criticism; digital literacies; and disability and writing.  Candidates should demonstrate a record of outstanding original scholarship, a strong commitment to energetic and innovative teaching, and a willingness to work collaboratively within and beyond Yale.
