Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Rhetoric and Professional Writing

Fairfield University, Department of English, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Rhetoric and Professional Writing beginning September, 2020. We seek a faculty member to lead the Professional Writing program within the English Department. The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 load, with courses in rhetoric, business writing, and other forms of professional writing, and participate in the University’s Core Writing program. The faculty member will contribute to the University’s nationally-ranked internship program.

We welcome candidates with secondary interests in areas such as Cultural Rhetorics, Digital & Visual Rhetorics, Translingual/Transnational Rhetorics, and Rhetorics of Health & Medicine. We encourage candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to social justice, equity, and inclusion efforts at Fairfield University and in the discipline of Rhetoric & Writing and/or Technical Communication more broadly.  

Fairfield University has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary work; this position offers opportunities to collaborate with the Charles S. Dolan School of Business, the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, and the School of Engineering, as well as programs within the College of Arts and Sciences. Requirements:

  • Ph.D. with an emphasis in rhetoric, professional writing, or closely-related area. Ph.D. in hand required by position start date.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the college level. 
  • Strong commitment to pedagogical innovation and demonstrated excellence in using technology in the classroom. 
  • Evidence of an active research program in the candidate’s area of specialization.
