Teaching Professor of American Sign Language

The Department of Classics and Modern Languages at Xavier University invites applications for a Teaching Professor of American Sign Language, starting Fall 2020. The Teaching Professor position is renewable on a yearly basis, with the potential after six years for promotion to Senior Teaching Professor with a rolling two-year renewable contract.

Enthusiasm for teaching language and culture at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and passion for teaching in a liberal arts environment are essential. The successful candidate will show clear potential for leadership and collaboration with faculty, staff, and community partners.

Candidates should be able to help support a diverse and inclusive student community while teaching courses in ASL. Candidates must be committed to outstanding teaching in a liberal arts tradition of active learning, knowledgeable of best practices of second language acquisition and pedagogy, familiar with new technologies for teaching languages, and willing to provide service consistent with the mission of Jesuit higher education. Active engagement with the local deaf community is expected.

Position Responsibilities

Teach four courses (12 credits) per semester (24 credits per academic year), including both required language courses and courses for the Deaf Studies Minor.

Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of ASL and Deaf Studies programs and curricula.

Engage in service-related activities of the department, and elsewhere on campus as appropriate.

Engage in professional development activities both on and off campus.

Qualifications:

Native or near-native proficiency in ASL and written English.

M.A. in ASL, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, or related field.

Certification from ASLTA or commitment to pursue ASLTA certification.

Preference given to applicants holding RID, NIC, CDI or CI/CT certification.

Demonstrated commitment to excellence in student-centered teaching and active learning. Ability to interact effectively with students, colleagues, university administrators, and the community.

Background, specialization, or other preparation in the area of pedagogy, second language acquisition, and/or language teaching.
