Position: Assistant Professor of English                                                                                                                                                                                

Stetson University seeks candidates broadly trained in the Literatures of the United States for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in the Department of English. Some desirable areas of expertise include (but are not limited to) writing in African-American, Latinx, Native American, Jewish, American Asian and Pacific Islander, Caribbean, and LGBTQ traditions. The ideal candidate is a teacher-scholar dedicated to modeling scholarship in the disciplines of English for undergraduate students, who engages students from diverse backgrounds, and who extends the diversity of the literatures and critical approaches we offer.

Qualifications:

PhD in English in hand or expected before August 2020, with an active scholarly agenda and demonstrated excellence teaching undergraduates in both general and specialized areas in the disciplines of English.

Responsibilities:  

The teaching load is three courses per semester. Major responsibilities include teaching the Survey of U.S. Literatures course, courses in Modernist and pre-modernist literatures of the United States, and courses in narrative and / or dramatic literature. The position offers opportunities to teach interdisciplinary and / or multidisciplinary courses including First-Year and Junior Seminars; courses cross-listed with Africana, Latin American and other area studies programs; courses that might support interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Studies, Public Health, or Gender Studies; other courses that fulfill College of Arts and Sciences General Education requirements; or courses focusing on writing.

The Department:

Beyond literary inquiry, the English Department (https://www.stetson.edu/other/academics/programs/english.php) supports work in Writing and Language Studies and in Creative Writing (extending to Digital, Auditory, and Visual productions). Faculty may have opportunities to contribute in all these areas.

College of Arts and Sciences:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts.  With nineteen academic departments and eight interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University.  A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars.  The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; six graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing.  Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship.  Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility.  All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community.  The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

The Community:

DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.

Salary:  Salary is competitive.
