University Lecturer in World or Global Literatures post 1700 (tenure track)

The Faculty of English wishes to appoint to a University Lectureship in World or Global Literatures post 1700 from 1 September 2020.

Applicants should have research and teaching interests in writing in English in world, transnational and global fields in any period post 1700. Applicants with research and teaching interests in the following fields are especially welcome: indenture; slavery; diaspora; migration; colonialism; decolonisation; transnational or transcontinental institutions, connections or receptions; global / oceanic literatures in English (which is understood to include, but is not limited to, literary and cultural engagements with the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean worlds).

We are open to a wide range of global literatures and approaches, including interdisciplinary work within global studies, and research engaging with other forms of media.

The successful applicant will be able to conduct original research in their field, generating new interpretations, arguments, methods and associations which will have international reach and significance. They will be expected to engage closely with the work of one or more of the research groups in the Faculty and, where appropriate to the research concerned, to develop proposals to attract significant external funding. The Faculty intends to appoint a scholar whose work will make a substantial difference to the way in which the study of this area is pursued and who is able to develop the kinds of public and professional engagement that will maximise the impact of their research. Candidates should have a completed PhD and an exceptional record of research in a relevant subject area, along with high-quality publications.

The successful applicant will support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in teaching. They will be expected to offer undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, as well as to be able to attract applications from the strongest PhD candidates worldwide.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be permanent, subject to a probationary period of five years.

The Lectureship will be held in conjunction with a College Lectureship at Newnham College, where the successful applicant will carry the title of the Valerie Eliot Fellow in English.
