Assistant Professor in Rhetoric and Composition

The University of Houston’s English department is seeking an Advanced Assistant Tenure Track hire with a primary specialization in Rhetoric and Composition and secondary specialization in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related area. We are seeking a candidate who specializes in Translingual Rhetorics; Cultural Rhetorics; Transcultural, Decolonial, or Global Rhetorics. The candidate should also have graduate-level training in applied linguistics, including but not limited to sociolinguistics, World/Global Englishes, TESOL, pedagogical English grammar and usage, or similar areas of scholarly study. The successful candidate will have a strong, developing research profile, with an established publication record; they will also have evidence of effective teaching, with possible nods to classes with community-based research, digital platforms, or innovative pedagogical designs.

 

The University of Houston is the premier, tier-one public doctoral institution in the nation’s fourth largest city and has one of the most diverse student bodies among research-one universities. The Department of English is a large, dynamic department offering the M.A. and Ph.D. in English and American literature; the M.F.A. and Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing; a doctoral concentration in Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy; and graduate certificates in Empire Studies, Teaching of English as an Additional Language, and Translation Studies. At the undergraduate level, we offer a concentration in Applied Linguistics and a soon-to-be-approved minor in Writing Studies. In addition to the English Department’s strengths, we house the Language and Culture Center, which provides intensive language instruction for international students and offers a rich laboratory for faculty, graduate students, and visiting scholars' research and teaching interests.
