Assistant Professor of English

The department is seeking to hire one full-time, tenure-track faculty position (instructor or assistant professor) starting in August of 2020, contingent upon need and funding.  

We welcome versatile candidates who have knowledge and experience in teaching diverse deaf and hard of hearing students in a wide range of courses:

  • developmental and support English courses;
  • freshman/sophomore courses, including all levels of General Studies foundation courses;
  • general humanities courses in the English Department, including those cross-listed with courses in the General Studies program; and               
  • English major courses, literature and/or various professional, new media, and creative writing courses.

Responsibilities: 

Faculty member will teach 9 to 12 credits each semester. Courses may cover the gamut from developmental English to English major-level courses in literature and writing. Teaching areas will depend upon the needs of the department and the interests and skills of the faculty member. Faculty members on tenure track are expected to publish and present in their field, and to serve at department and university levels and in their profession and community.

Required qualifications: 

Candidates must have or be reasonably close to completion of a doctorate in English or a closely related field. All candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach effectively with diverse populations, including deaf and hard of hearing students. Candidates must be prepared to communicate in American Sign Language, as Gallaudet University is a bilingual university. They also must be aware of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf and hard of hearing students.
