Assistant Professor of Screen Studies ( Production )

Position Overview:

Eugene Lang College, a college of The New School, invites applications for a renewable term Assistant Professor to teach audio-visual production in a liberal arts context. The four-year appointment starts July 1, 2020. The faculty member will teach core courses in screenwriting, cinematography, directing, sound and/or editing as well as advanced level elective courses of their own design. Applicants with experience in narrative film, and with a specialization in screenwriting, are especially encouraged to apply. A familiarity with a wide range of video production practices and tools is essential. Also essential is a track record in professional creative production in a key position, such as screenwriter, director or director of photography.
The Culture and Media department at Eugene Lang College offers the Screen Studies program as a part of its offerings in Culture, Media and Screen. Students graduate either as Screen Studies majors or take Screen Studies courses as part of a Culture and Media major. Lang is a liberal arts college dedicated to giving students a rounded education, so students take a range of other courses alongside their Screen Studies courses. Within the Screen Studies program, courses adopt a hybrid approach to the study of moving images, and production courses emphasize thinking as integral to the process of making. Additionally, the Culture and Media department offers courses in both making screen-based media work and in the study of film, video and other media, drawing on a variety of methods and intellectual traditions. The successful candidate will join a diverse, creative and forward-thinking department that includes both scholars of media and artists working in a variety of moving image media.
Faculty teach five courses or equivalent per year across the graduate and undergraduate level, in addition to advising students and supervising theses. The Renewable Term Appointment (RTA) is a university-wide faculty appointment type. The first contract is generally for 4 years; contracts may be renewed indefinitely, dependent on university need and successful review at the end of each contract. RTA faculty are considered principal faculty and are eligible for research support. They may also may be considered for promotion in rank.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a terminal degree in a related academic field (or the equivalent in professional experience). They must also have demonstrable professional experience at the time of application, teaching experience, strong evidence of the ability to produce audio-visual media, and a clear career trajectory.
