The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) Portuguese program at Arizona State University (Tempe campus) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer or Lecturer Sr. of Portuguese with a preferred start date of August 2020. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, 9-month appointment (Aug -May). The Portuguese program offers a Certificate in Brazilian Studies. The Spanish program offers Bachelor of Arts major and minor degree programs, in addition to a graduate program. This position is non-tenure eligible and may be renewed annually pending satisfactory job performance, availability of funding, and the needs of the university.

Essential Functions:

  • The selected candidate will teach 8 language courses per academic year. These courses may be a combination of Portuguese and Spanish language courses and potentially courses on Brazilian culture. 
  • Provide leadership in recruiting and program coordination in Portuguese (prepare syllabi, lectures, class materials, and schedule class assignments).
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Service responsibilities include Portuguese program development and recruitment.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA degree or higher in Portuguese in hand by the time of appointment.
  • Three years’ experience in higher education teaching Portuguese language (elementary through advanced level), including Portuguese for Spanish or Romance language speakers.
  • Native/Near-native ability in Portuguese.
  • Demonstrated experience in Portuguese program development and recruitment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or preparation to teach Lusophone (esp. Brazilian) Cultural Studies courses.
  • Native/Near-native ability in Spanish.
  • ACTFL OPI training. 
  • Experience in on-line teaching. 
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
