Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Rhetoric and Composition

A selective liberal arts university founded upon the principles of peace and human rights, SUA is committed to a global and inter- or multidisciplinary approach to education and aims to foster close intellectual relations between faculty members and students by encouraging mentoring on the part of the faculty. Students come from all over the world and are invited to take courses in any of our 5 concentrations: Environmental Studies, Social and Behavioral Studies, Humanities, International Studies, and our newest concentration, Life Sciences. Our Life Sciences concentration will open in 2020. Thus, we seek colleagues who are innovative pedagogically and interested in helping our Writing Program to develop and grow, as our campus grows. We seek a candidate who is committed to diversity, pedagogy, social justice, human rights and the concept of global citizenship, in keeping with the mission statement of the university. Soka University of America’s beautiful campus, located in Aliso Viejo, California, is within easy access of the rich cultural offerings of both Los Angeles and San Diego.

The Writing Program at Soka University of American seeks an outstanding teacher-scholar in writing studies, literacy and/or rhetoric at the rank of assistant professor. The ideal candidate will have an interdisciplinary profile, be able to mentor students across the all five of our Liberal Arts concentrations, and teach at least 1 course per year in our General Education curriculum. We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD in Rhetoric & Composition, English, or related fields. We are especially interested in scholars doing innovative work as researchers and teachers in interdisciplinary areas like rhetorics of science and/or rhetorics of the environment.

The candidate will help design and teaching upper-level and first-year courses in Soka University of America’s expanding Writing Program. The regular teaching load is five courses per academic year. We seek a colleague who will help our program grow to meet the needs of our newest concentration, Life Sciences, in addition to the other concentrations, as well as helping our program to adapt to the ever-changing fields of composition and oral communication.
