Assistant Professor and Director of First-Year Writing

The Literary Arts & Studies (LAS) program of the University of New Hampshire at Manchester seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position to serve as the First Year Writing program director. The position will begin August 2020.

A Ph.D. in Composition, or equivalent, is required. Evidence of scholarship in pedagogy is preferred and teaching excellence is required.

Our mission is to develop learners with the knowledge and skills to flourish in the academic environment, employment and civic life. To this end, the position encompasses much more than instruction in academic writing. It requires knowledge and experience in learning and pedagogy, information literacy, and K-12 literacy programs. Expectations include knowledge of multilingual communities and experience in inclusive teaching to diverse student bodies.

The teaching load is 3/3. This includes developing the first year writing curriculum, teaching First Year Writing (ENGL 401) and Literacy Studio (ENGL 401S), and supervising instructors. Coordination with First Year Writing for Multi-Lingual Students (ENGL 401A) instructors is required. Experience teaching at the secondary level is strongly preferred.

The position will support the BA in English Teaching through academic advising and teaching junior, senior and graduate students in secondary methods courses: Teaching Writing (ENGL 710) and Teaching Literature and Literacy (ENGL 792). Coordination with the UNH Durham Teaching English program, English and Education departments, and the NH State Department of Education, and an active outreach effort to area high schools and community colleges are required.

As a college and university resource for writing across and within disciplines, this position includes collaboration with librarians, media specialists, faculty, and the University Writing Program.
