Assistant Professor of English (Medieval Studies)

The Department of English at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Medieval Studies, to begin in fall 2020. We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages digital humanities and/or the Global Middle Ages.  Secondary fields may also include the environmental humanities, manuscript studies, and/or women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, among other fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory survey courses in early British literature serving the General Education curriculum, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate (MA) courses in medieval literature as well as their research focus. The English faculty does not teach freshman composition. This position carries a 3/2 teaching load. The Ph.D. is required in hand by the summer of 2020.

The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. In addition to summarizing the candidate’s research interests, the cover letter should describe ways in which the candidate can contribute to the diversity of the classroom, program, and university.

We will begin reviewing applications on December 5, and plan to conduct Skype interviews of finalists on January 6 and 7. Applicants MUST apply online at: joblink.jmu.edu. Applicants should upload letter of application, vita, scholarly writing sample, graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation directly to Joblink.

A teaching dossier (course syllabi, classroom observations, assignments, and summaries of course evaluations, if available) will be requested from all finalists. Direct questions about this search to Dr. Mark Rankin (rankinmc@jmu.edu).
