Position Description

The Department of Literature in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time term position in Literature, Culture, and Technology. The appointment is through May 2021 and will commence on January 13th, 2020. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field.

 

Qualifications

Applicants should hold at least an MA in English, Comparative Literature, Film Studies or related field, with specialization in social and cultural approaches to technology, cultural studies, or history of science and technology especially desired. Successful candidates will possess a demonstrated secondary expertise in Computer Science (proficiency in Python, JS, or Java preferred), Electronic Literature, Interactive Fiction, Game Programming & Design, or another Information Technology field. Applicants with a primary expertise in one of the latter fields and a demonstrated expertise in a literature-related field will also be considered. Applicants should have a demonstrated capacity for effective teaching. The position will require the incumbent to teach primarily LIT-204, a new class in the AU Core curriculum that combines critical analysis skills, cultural approaches to technology, and quantitative reasoning methods, as well as seminars in our new MA program in Literature, Culture, and Technology, and other undergraduate courses as appropriate. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
