Writing Center Director/Open Rank Tenure-Track Professor in the Writing Program

Students come from all over the world and are invited to take courses in any of our 5 concentrations: Environmental Studies, Social and Behavioral Studies, Humanities, International Studies, and our newest concentration, Life Sciences. Our Life Sciences concentration will open in 2020. Thus, we seek colleagues who are innovative pedagogically and interested in helping our Writing Program to develop and grow, as our campus grows. We seek candidates committed to diversity, pedagogy, social justice, human rights and the concept of global citizenship, in keeping with the mission statement of the university. Soka University of America’s beautiful campus, located in Aliso Viejo, California, is within easy access of the rich cultural offerings of both Los Angeles and San Diego.

We seek a colleague who will serve a dual position as Director of the Writing Center and as faculty member in the Writing Program. Our ideal candidate will be an outstanding scholar, teacher, and Writing Center administrator with a strong background in Composition and Rhetoric, preferably with research interests and scholarship in Writing Center theory and practice; a strong commitment to a Writing Center as an academic resource for writing and multi-modal communication for students and faculty; a passion for undergraduate teaching; experience in teaching and advising students of diverse backgrounds; the ability to work well with faculty across the university; an interest in cultivating connections among the Writing Center, the Writing Program, and other SUA academic programs; and a continuing program of scholarly activity. The regular teaching load is five courses per academic year with a reduced teaching load for the Writing Center Director.

Qualifications:  Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field from an accredited university with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition, as well as experience and scholarship in Writing Center administration. Demonstrated ability to oversee and direct staff and faculty, manage budgets, and develop and implement activities as well as strategic plans in the university Writing Center. Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
