The Department of Languages and Cultures at California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) seeks to hire at the assistant level for a tenure track position starting in the Fall of 2020. Eligible applicants will have a Ph.D. in French/Francophone Studies or related field officially conferred by an accredited degree-granting university. The application must be written (or translated) in English. ABDs will be considered for appointment at the instructor level with degree to be conferred by Fall 2020. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated expertise in Francophone studies and the ability to offer courses appropriate to the Ethnic and Race Studies (ERS) Program. Note that the ERS program is focused on ethnic and racial groups in the U.S. context. Candidates will also have an enthusiasm for program building and the recruitment of new students to the French program, particularly those who have some degree of fluency in Spanish. Successful candidates will be committed to teaching, research, and service at a liberal arts university that is a Hispanic Serving and McNair institution. They will also provide evidence of excellence in teaching and advising, and a commitment to developing a research program involving undergraduate students.

The French program in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Cal Lutheran seeks to promote experiential learning on campus and in the surrounding communities. The department values multicultural and practical learning experiences that involve and engage local communities. In collaboration with other College departments and the Center for Equality and Justice, the department promotes innovative student and faculty research in national and transnational contexts in and around Cal Lutheran.

A full-teaching load is usually three courses per academic semester and six per academic year. Primary teaching responsibilities may include courses ranging from language instruction to specialized content, for example: Elementary and Intermediate French, Conversation and Composition, literature and society surveys, and cinema. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to assess and reshape the current French major and minor programs of study and develop creative and engaging courses in their area of expertise, which could include study abroad and travel seminar experiences. Francophone course content is expected.

It is essential that candidates possess the ability or potential to teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate students, particularly those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Applicants with demonstrated ability to attract students to French courses from the areas of business, education, communication, psychology, STEM, and First Year Experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligible applicants for this position include:

U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), foreigners currently holding work eligible visas (H—1B), graduate students ready to convert their status from student to full time work, and individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (depending on the status of this program at the time of application), political asylees, and refugees. Evaluation Criteria:

 

Candidates will be assessed based on the following criteria:
1) Demonstrated experience or potential to effectively teach courses related to French language and French and Francophone culture;
2) Experience with, or knowledge and understanding of mentoring and engaging undergraduate students (inside and outside of the classroom), particularly those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds;
3) Evidence of, or potential for both producing scholarship and sustaining an active research agenda;
4) Commitment to a liberal arts education and service to the mission of the University and College of Arts & Sciences

 

Required Materials:
Cover Letter: A one-page letter that addresses first the candidate’s teaching and research in relation to French language instruction and French and Francophone culture; and second, why Cal Lutheran’s program is an ideal place to pursue their teaching, research, and other professional aspirations. Lastly, the letter should describe how the candidate’s experiences will further the HSI designation of the university and the unique needs of underrepresented students.

Diversity, Teaching, and Research Statement: This two-page statement should first address the candidate’s philosophy of and commitment to teaching and diversity. The statement should discuss teaching and diversity with respect to mentoring and engaging students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, adapting teaching methods to the needs of underrepresented ethnic minority students and first generation college students, and any experience with and/or interest in mentoring student research. Second, the statement should briefly describe the candidate’s completed research and their future agenda. Where possible, candidates should highlight how their research reflects their understanding of intersectionality, equity, and inclusion.


Curriculum Vitae: A comprehensive resume of professional and educational qualifications.

Reference Letters:
Three reference letters specifically addressing whether the candidate has the experiences, dispositions, and abilities to work with underrepresented students. These letters will be requested by the university, not attached as part of the application.
