Assistant Professor, TESOL and Applied Linguistics

The University of Northern Iowa's College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences - Department of Languages & Literatures seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of TESOL/Applied Linguistics, beginning January 2021. Areas of teaching and research include one or more of the following: K-12 ELL education, second language acquisition and pedagogy, bilingual education, applied linguistics, and educational linguistics.

This position includes teaching courses in second language teaching methodology, TESOL methods (including a practicum for students seeking K-12 ELL licensure), and core applied linguistics courses; working extensively with pre-service teachers; and collaborating with local schools. Preferred duties include some teaching in our French or Spanish programs.

Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in TESOL, ELL, Bilingual Education, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics or a related field required by time of appointment.

Required qualifications include demonstrated U.S. or Canadian K-12 teaching experience with English language learners or in bilingual education; knowledge of current K-12 TESOL/ELL pedagogies; active research agenda in TESOL, ELL, bilingual education, applied linguistics, or related areas; and Native/Near-native proficiency in English.

Preferred qualifications include Native/Near-native proficiency in French or Spanish; experience teaching or ability to teach courses in French or Spanish; experience with immigrant/refugee communities, or other diverse populations; university-level teaching experience in education-related courses in TESOL, ELL, bilingual education, or applied linguistics with pre-service teachers; secondary or primary education licensure; experience teaching with technology and/or online courses; and commitment to community engagement and collaborative partnerships with local schools.
