Assistant Professor in Transoceanic Literary/Cultural Studies (1492-1820)

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Davis is dedicated to goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.  As part of our university’s mission to grow as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), we invite applications for a tenure-track position in Transoceanic Literary/Cultural Studies (1492-1820). Research should focus on metropolitan Spain and on spaces of Spanish colonialism, such as the Americas, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Philippines. A focus on comparative race, gender, and empire studies is highly desirable.

The appointee is expected to teach a broad range of graduate and undergraduate courses in peninsular, transatlantic, and colonial Latin American literatures and cultures. Applicants should possess native or near-native language competency in Spanish and English. Knowledge of other languages relevant to Spanish colonialism is desirable.  The ideal candidate should have expert knowledge of circuits of colonial-era literary and cultural production operating between metropolitan Spain and the Spanish empire.  Applicants must demonstrate exceptional promise as scholars and teachers and have the ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the shared governance and intellectual life of the department and the larger UC Davis community. A Ph.D. in Spanish or any other related field is required and must be in hand prior to the first day of classes on September 22, 2021.
