Assistant Professor, Department of English

The English Department at Wesleyan University seeks a scholar-teacher of African American
and Afro-diasporic Literary Studies for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor
level, beginning July 1, 2021. The search is open to all subfields and all periods. Applications
from candidates whose work engages Black feminism, Afro-Pessimism, queer of color critique,
comparative ethnic literatures, poetics, post-humanism, the Enlightenment, Afro-Latinx Studies,
Performance Studies, and Global South studies are welcome. Candidates may work in African
American, Caribbean, and African archives.
Wesleyan faculty have a deep commitment both to undergraduate teaching and the practice of
scholarly writing and publication. The successful scholar-teacher candidate will be expected to
be an active contributor to the field, and to teach four literature courses per year (two per
semester). Among those four courses, the successful candidate will regularly teach the
Department’s gateway course, Ways of Reading. Additional duties include advising and
mentoring students, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university
level. 
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be
hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the
candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the
Ph.D.in English or related field within one year of hire.
