Academic Professional—Director of the Naugle Communication Center

The School of Literature, Media, and Communication seeks an Academic Professional to serve as Director of the Naugle Communication Center, to manage day-to-day operations of the center, with primary responsibility for the following efforts: managing the recruitment/hiring process and orientation of student staff; assisting the Executive Director with the hiring process and orientation of professional staff; serving as the first line of response to concerns of staff; updating and maintaining training materials; coordinating the center schedule; serving as primary administrator for the scheduling system and is the liaison with other campus units using that system; assisting the Executive Director coordinating our research program; assisting the Executive Director coordinating programmatic assessment; supervising student workers; coordinating marketing materials; and representing the center on committees associated with the center.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in writing center studies, rhetoric, composition, technical/business communication, speech communication, linguistics, literature, or a related area; at least five years of experience working as writing and communications tutor, preferably with a predominantly STEM-focused population of graduate and undergraduate students; experience teaching university-level composition and/or technical communication with a focus on STEM disciplines; experience in supervision/management of a tutoring center; experience with TutorTrac scheduling system software; experience with synchronous and asynchronous remote tutoring; and a confident knowledge of multimodal and multiliteracy theory and practice. An earned doctorate is required by the start of the appointment, and a background check must be completed prior to employment. The position presumes professional, courteous, and productive interaction with all colleagues.  Candidates must be willing to work some evenings and weekends. The position also includes a range of evolving responsibilities, such as

1.   Overseeing the daily operations of the center.

2.   Collaborating with the Executive Director for the professional development of professional tutors. 

3.   Managing and evaluating student staff.

4.   Developing, managing, and assessing center programs, workshops, and materials. 

5.   Representing the center in institute, local, regional, and national venues.

6.   Collaborating with the Executive Director to review and update center policies and procedures. 

7.   Collaborating with the Executive Director for center research initiatives. 

8.   Developing a personal scholarly agenda leading to presentations and publications related to the center’s overall research mission.

Academic Professionals in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication are expected to teach two courses per academic year.

This position is a non-tenure-track, annual (12-month) appointment, which may be renewed annually. We anticipate a start date of no later than January 1, 2021, pending institute approval. Please note that 12-month employees must work during the summer and during school breaks, except when the campus is officially closed. The position offers a career path towards promotion to ranks of Senior Academic Professional and Principal Academic Professional. 

This position will report to the Executive Director of the Naugle Communication Center.

At the innovative Naugle Communication Center, students from all disciplines at Georgia Tech work with tutors with expertise in core areas of communication. From tutors, students learn both conventional and innovative techniques of communication and diverse strategies for effectively conveying ideas. Students collaborate with tutors to improve upon defining, realizing, and relaying their own interests and needs as communicators. By talking with tutors about such aspects as the audience, format, medium, and style of their projects, students further develop their written, oral, visual, electronic, and non-verbal communication skills.
