Assistant Professor of German Studies

The Department of German, Russian, Italian, and Arabic at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position in German Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2021. Applicants should have native, or near-native, fluency in German and have a record of excellence in teaching German language at all levels, as well as experience in building a successful language program that engages students creatively both in the classroom as well as with co-curricular activities. This hire will teach German language classes as well as courses in translation relevant to their interests and areas of expertise. We are interested in hiring a scholar whose work focuses primarily on the modern or contemporary periods (19th century to the present), and whose teaching and research can also contribute to one or more of the College's other departments or interdisciplinary programs. We seek candidates who can demonstrate their experience in teaching or working with diverse student populations. Your cover letter should address the ways in which you would further the College's goal of building a diverse and inclusive educational environment. The position requires institutional service including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year.

While we will consider advanced ABD candidates, a Ph.D in German, German Studies, or closely-related field (e.g. Comparative Literature) is preferred. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the first year and five courses thereafter. Candidates should submit a cover letter, cv, a teaching philosophy statement, and two sample syllabi: one for an intro language course, the other for a topics course in translation via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/78659. Letters of reference and a writing sample will be requested from candidates selected for the first round of interviews. Questions regarding the search may be directed to John Eldevik, Search Committee Chair, at jeldevik@hamilton.edu. Our review of applications will begin on November 9, 2020.
