Assistant Professor of Spanish

The Washington and Lee University Department of Romance Languages invites applications for a tenure-track position in Golden-Age Spanish literature at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a candidate with teaching and scholarly interests in the canonical writers of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and also able to connect that literary culture to the implications of empire, including the response in the Americas to the imposition of cultural norms and political will on local populations, including indigenous and enslaved peoples, as well as colonists. The appointment begins July 1, 2021. Candidates should be prepared to teach language courses, introductory courses on literature and culture, and advanced courses in their field of specialization. Candidates should also be prepared to contribute to the university’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies and/or Medieval-Renaissance Studies programs, and to lead study abroad programs.

Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.
