Dean, Berry College Evans School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

Berry College invites applications or nominations for an inspiring leader, recognized scholar, and persuasive advocate for the centrality of the humanities, arts, and social sciences to an undergraduate education to serve as Dean of the Evans School.  The Dean will serve as an exemplary teacher-scholar model and mentor. We seek candidates whose scholarship, teaching, service, and administrative experiences have prepared them to contribute to the personal and professional success of our students and our commitment to engagement and inclusion of diverse communities in higher education. Berry College’s Evans School boasts 75 engaged faculty members who serve as teachers, scholars, and mentors to students. The faculty and academic programs occupy five buildings whose facilities include the recently-constructed 276-seat Sisters Theatre, and an acoustically optimized performance and recital hall in the picturesque Ford complex.  Berry’s students study communication (digital storytelling, filmmaking and cinematic arts, public relations, and sports com); writing, creative writing, and literature; history; political science and international affairs; religion and philosophy; sociology and anthropology; environmental science and studies; world languages and cultures (French, German and Spanish); and the fine arts (music, dance, visual art, and theatre).  Students are involved on and off campus in leadership, scholarship, work, and community service opportunities that support their diverse academic, career, and personal interests.  Further information on the Evans School may be found at:

Job Responsibilities

The Dean serves as the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer of the Evans School and reports directly to the College’s Provost.  The Evans Dean:

·         Works collaboratively with the Evans School’s faculty, College administration, the deans of other Schools, and external partners to promote and catalyze improvements to the School’s teaching, research and performance capabilities, departmental curricula, interdisciplinary programs, and facilities.

·         Supervises all Evans faculty, Department Chairs and coordinators, and administrative staff.

·         Oversees and assists Evans departments in the hiring of a diverse, high quality, faculty and staff.

·         Recommends hiring, reappointment, promotion and tenure, and other personnel actions as necessary.

·         Assists students and faculty with requests, collaborations, exceptions, complaints, and the resolution of grievances.

·         Acts as an effective communicator and liaison to both internal and external constituencies, including fund-raising activities in conjunction with the Advancement office. 

·         Recommends a school budget to the Provost, and oversees the allocation and spending of School funds.

·         Teaches one course each year in their discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate by an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented by the Evans School with sufficient qualifications to merit appointment to the rank of full professor.  The successful candidate will have a proven and effective track record of service in an administrative position such as dean, associate dean, or department chair that demonstrates the candidate’s commitment to innovation and improvement.
