ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE STUDIES
TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION
The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, & Cultures at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies to begin fall 2021. A PhD in French and Francophone Studies (or closely related) is required by August 1st, 2021 (or evidence of imminent completion by start date). We seek candidates with a generalist profile and expertise in Francophone Studies who can teach language courses as well as more general undergraduate upper-level students in literature and culture courses. Area of specialization will focus on the non-Western Francophone world. We will consider applicants working in one of the following historical periods: 19th-, 20th- or 21st-Century French and Francophone Studies and in the following areas: Caribbean Studies, Francophone Sub-Saharan Diaspora, Francophone Asian or Francophone Oceanic Studies or a closely-related field. Wofford College and the French program are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education, and who can contribute to the diversity of our community. Secondary expertise and/or experience in one of the following disciplines: Francophone Cultural Studies, Colonial/Post-Colonial Studies, Gender Studies, Race Studies or Francophone Visual Culture (Cinéma, Bande-Dessinée, Painting, Digital Media) is also desired.
The Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies will teach 7 courses per year (3-1-3), first- through fourth-year French language, Francophone literature and Francophone culture courses. The successful candidate will work toward broadening the curriculum in Francophone studies and will work collaboratively within the department and throughout the campus to strengthen the French and Francophone program. (This includes recruiting French minors and majors, supporting, coordinating extra-curricular activities with the French club, participating actively in department-wide initiatives, and having an interest in community outreach events). Candidates are expected to be teacher-scholars with a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching and advising and demonstrate a commitment to the liberal arts and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship. Duties also involve students’ academic advising (general education and program-specific), committee service, and departmental and institutional obligations. Because Tenure and Promotion at Wofford College require an active research commitment, peer-reviewed academic production or other evidence of scholarly promise is expected when applying.
The appointee will teach three courses in the fall and spring semesters plus one Interim course (3-1-3). “Interim” is a month-long term during which professors may lead off-campus study programs or teach on campus on a variety of topics using experiential teaching methods. Wofford provides an opportunity for a sabbatical after every six years of service. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s level of experience.
Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies, or closely related field with a specialization in the non-Western Francophone world (Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia or Oceania) in one of the following historical periods: 19th-, 20th- or 21st-Century by beginning of Fall semester of 2021.
A secondary area of expertise and/or experience in Francophone Cultural Studies or Colonial/Post-Colonial Studies, Gender Studies, Race Studies or Francophone Visual Culture is desired.
ABD candidates will be considered if they can provide evidence of potential to complete their degree by time of appointment.
Must be fluent in French and demonstrate a proficiency comparable to the ACTFL result of Superior. Candidates must also be fluent in English.
Must have at least 18 credit hours of French courses at the graduate level.
Must have at least two years of teaching experience at the collegiate level and previous pedagogical training.
Demonstrate excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
Demonstrate evidence of creativity in course design.
Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with multiple stakeholders in a college environment.
Demonstrate evidence of an active research agenda in scholarship and professional development.
Proficiency in using technology in the classroom.

The MLLC department is one of the largest departments on campus with thirteen full-time professors teaching in the five distinct language programs of Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
Spartanburg is located in the upstate of South Carolina, approximately 30 miles east from the neighboring city of Greenville, S.C., less than an hour southwest from the major urban area of Charlotte, North Carolina, and just three hours east of Atlanta, Georgia. The coast as well as historic Charleston is just three hours away, and Wofford sits just an hour south from the artistic and culinary hub of Asheville, North Carolina, nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains.
The Spartanburg area boasts an active international commercial community that comprises companies such as BMW, Draexlmaier and Michelin. Spartanburg is a growing and diverse community that supports six college and university campuses along with numerous civic arts and cultural associations. Wofford College has operated continuously on its original campus in Spartanburg since 1854 and was designated a National Historic District in 1974. In November 2002, the entire 170-acre campus was designated as the Roger Milliken Arboretum.
