Assistant Professor of Cultural Rhetoric

Job Summary

The Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a beginning or advanced tenure-track Assistant Professor of Cultural Rhetoric to begin August 2020.  A specialty is desired in critical approaches to race, ethnicity, culture, embodiment, and/or decolonialism, borders, and migration.  A Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or closely related field is required.  PWR welcomes a candidate who will contribute to the ongoing development of the WRITE Lab (writing, rhetoric, information, technology, and ecology), a practice-based research and pedagogy space that asks what it means to write in the 21st century, a question informed by Cultural Rhetoric. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching and research excellence as well as a strong interest in dynamic writing program administration, curricular development, and program-building. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by August 2020.  

Who We Are

The Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) at the University of Colorado at Boulder is an active community of teachers and scholars committed to making writing central to the undergraduate education of our students. We are an autonomous unit in the College of Arts and Sciences responsible for campus-wide writing instruction. A nationally recognized writing program, we have won prestigious awards in diversity and inclusion, sustainability, service learning, and writing program administration. Our faculty, both the four TTT faculty and the forty instructor-rank faculty, are well versed in writing theory and pedagogy.

The site of scholarly research in the PWR is the W.R.I.T.E. Lab. It is a space for exploring the question of what it means to write in the 21st-century. Research in the W.R.I.T.E. Lab is accomplished through innovative, interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of writing, rhetoric, information, technology, and ecology. In theory and method, we work to disclose how various modes of composing and performance engender identities, informatics, publics, policies, literacies, civic participation, and cultural activities in local and globalized settings. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The ideal candidate for this position would strengthen PWR’s current research profile and curricular offerings through participation in the W.R.I.T.E. Lab.  As a contributing and valued member of W.R.I.T.E. Lab, the new member would help establish the research parameters of the Lab, help develop its national profile, identify researchers and mentors from around the country to collaborate within their own research and teaching.  

What You Should Know

The position is rostered in the PWR, and affiliated with a cognate unit to be determined by the candidates’ research and teaching interests.  The annual teaching load is 2/2, with significant time off in the first four years to develop a research agenda.
