General Information: The Department of English has one undergraduate program offering a BA in English and two minors, one in English and one in Writing. The department also runs the English Center, which provides tutoring to all students at the university. 

The department is seeking to hire three full-time faculty at the Non-Tenure Track, Pre-Tenure Track, or Tenure-Track (instructor or assistant professor) level. Candidates must state in their application materials which track they would like to be considered for. The positions will start in August 2021 and are contingent upon need and funding.

We welcome versatile candidates who have knowledge of and experience teaching diverse deaf and hard of hearing students in a wide range of courses, which include:

  • developmental and support English courses;
  • freshman/sophomore composition courses
  • general studies courses;
  • general humanities courses; and               
  • English major courses, which include literature and literary theory, cultural studies, cinema and media studies, professional writing, writing for social and digital media, and creative writing.

For appointment at the tenure track, preference will be given to applicants who can contribute to major/minor curriculum development and teach major level courses. The department is particularly interested in applicants who can teach critical race theory, literature from traditionally underrepresented groups, cinema and media studies, creative writing, professional writing, and writing for digital and social media. Training and experience in teaching composition and/or ELL students is also preferred. Teaching assignments typically include multiple composition courses and one major-level course each semester.

Primary Responsibilities:

Non-tenure track faculty teach four courses each semester. Pre-tenure track faculty teach two courses each semester. Tenure track faculty teach three courses each semester. Teaching assignments will depend upon the needs of the department and the interests and skills of the faculty member. In addition to teaching, non-tenure track faculty are evaluated in one additional area, scholarship/creative work or service at department and university levels. Pre-tenure track faculty are expected to make significant progress towards completion of a terminal degree each semester. Tenure track faculty are expected to publish and present in their field, and to serve at department and university levels and in their profession and community.

Minimum qualifications:

For appointment to the non-tenure track, candidates must hold an MA in English or a closely related field. For appointment to the pre-tenure track, candidates must be admitted to an MFA program in writing or a doctoral program in English or a closely related field. For appointment to the tenure track, candidates must hold an MFA in writing or a doctorate in English or a closely related field. All candidates should be able to teach diverse populations effectively, including deaf and hard of hearing students. Candidates must be prepared to communicate in American Sign Language, as Gallaudet University is a bilingual university. They also must be aware of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf and hard of hearing students.
