Assistant Professor

The Department of English at Auburn University invites applications for a beginning or an advanced tenure-track Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition, with specialization in Writing Program Administration, to begin August 2021. The successful candidate will assume an immediate leadership role as Director of Composition. Standard teaching assignment for tenure track faculty is 2-2; course load while serving in this administrative position is 1-1, based on a renewable, three-year term. The Department of English actively recognizes writing program administration as a site of scholarly work and professional advancement, and in addition to collaborating with colleagues to develop the first-year writing program, the candidate will have opportunities to shape an undergraduate major in Professional and Public Writing and MA and PhD concentrations in Rhetoric and Composition. We are particularly interested in candidates who can advance the Department's commitment to building a diverse and inclusive educational community through research, teaching, and administrative activity. Required qualifications include a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, English, or a closely allied field by the August 2021 starting date; a strong research and teaching specialization in Rhetoric and Composition and writing program administration; evidence of successful postsecondary teaching and administrative experience; ability to design and implement graduate courses     and professional development opportunities     focused on the teaching of first-year writing; and a commitment to shaping the vision and mission of the first-year writing program in collaboration with departmental faculty and other stakeholders in the university community. We also seek a candidate who demonstrates potential for success in the following areas: teaching advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Rhetoric and Composition; advising MA and PhD students in Rhetoric and Composition; and maintaining an active program of scholarly research and publication. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment; excellent communication skills required.

Desired qualifications include research and pedagogical interests in the scholarly work of writing program administration, including the ability to develop curricula, teach and collaborate with graduate teaching assistants and departmental faculty, and engage in program assessment. Research focus is open, but we particularly seek candidates with strengths in one or more of the following areas: anti-racist/decolonial writing pedagogy and assessment; critical race theory; multilingual composition; Global Englishes; cultural rhetorics. In addition, we welcome candidates with interests in community writing and collaborative work across disciplinary and administrative units.
