Job Summary

The Department of Language and Literature at Florida Gulf Coast University invites applications for an Instructor of Spanish, beginning fall semester 2021. As an Instructor I of Spanish, you will teach at the undergraduate level; be involved in course and/or curriculum development; complete research/scholarship; and participate in College and University committees and/or initiatives. The successful candidate will have at least one full year of teaching experience, and have native or near-native fluency in Spanish.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Teaches a 3/3 load of Spanish language courses (4 credit hours each, 12 credits total).
  • Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates
  • Engages in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.
  • Actively serves on university committees.
  • Actively participates in institutional meetings
  • Assists with the development of curriculum
  • Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with the mission of the University. Community, institutional and professional service in furtherance of FGCU’s mission is expected of all faculty.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Chair.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Spanish from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation OR Master’s degree in a related area with 18 credit hours of coursework in Spanish at the graduate level.
  • One full year of teaching experience.
  • Experience in teaching beginning and  intermediate Spanish-language classes.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
  • Must meet the University and College criteria for the appointment to the level of Instructor I.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in Spanish from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation; three years of teaching experience at the university level; and experience with extracurricular activities, service learning, and study abroad programs.

  • Commitment to participating in an innovative language program.
  • High level of professionalism, collegiality, and strong commitment to student success.
  • Experience with or commitment to using technology in distance learning and university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued professional development and service to the College and University.
