Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Media Studies

The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Critical Digital Methods and Practices. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Media Studies or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. The successful candidate must have a breadth of experience teaching digital design, digital methods, and/or emergent techno-cultural practice. Candidates’ practice may be interdisciplinary, and must demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas: critical software studies, critical code studies, critical data studies; platform studies; and/or digital media practices among minoritized communities. Priority will be given to candidates who are proficient in and have demonstrated teaching experience in both applied and critical engagements with digital methods, preferably with expertise in data visualization, data retrieval, and other digital tools.

Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Candidates must demonstrate excellent teaching ability and the capacity to teach a wide range of courses in media studies by providing a teaching portfolio, which includes: a coherent statement of teaching philosophy linked to excellent pedagogical practice; sample course syllabi;  course materials; teaching evaluations; and documentation indicating innovation in any other teaching related activities, such as leading workshops or seminars, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and supervising students in the undergraduate degree program, fulfilling other professional and administrative activities related to teaching, and participating in curriculum development and departmental and university committee work in order to contribute to program and departmental initiatives. We especially welcome candidates with experience in these areas as well as in working with, teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students, and who have demonstrated the ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline.
