Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Writing Center

High Point University invites applications for a 9-month, new tenure-track Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Writing Center. The position begins August 2021. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the standard teaching load of 3 courses per semester has been increased to 4, and the position’s course release has been temporarily suspended.  The standard load is expected to be reinstated in AY 2021-2022 or AY 2022-2023.

We seek an outstanding teacher-scholar to direct a writing center which serves undergraduate and graduate students across the university. Along with “Writing Center Theory,” the candidate will primarily teach courses in the general education curriculum, including first-year writing, first-year seminar, and an “Introduction to Public and Professional Writing” course that is part of a growing minor. Upper-level teaching opportunities will be available on rotation and/or as needed. Competitive candidates will demonstrate a vision for cultivating a vibrant culture of writing at a small private university and will have a robust research agenda. Specialization is open, but preferred areas of interest include writing center theory and practice, writing studies, community writing, writing across the curriculum, professional and technical writing, and whiteness studies.

We especially invite candidates who have a record of leadership in writing center positions and experience working with academic support programs. Strong candidates will also have experience training writing tutors and working directly with diverse student writers.

The writing center at High Point University provides various programs of support for undergraduate and graduate student writers across composition, degree, and ESL programs. The Director’s responsibilities each semester will include making budgetary decisions, cultivating partnerships throughout the campus and broader writing community, and communicating the mission of the center to campus stakeholders.

The Director will: recruit, educate, and mentor undergraduate writing center tutors; grow and maintain writing center resources and services; conduct ongoing assessment; and provide professional development opportunities to tutors and staff. Service to the department and university is also expected.

The English Department is committed to diversity, inclusivity, and equity through research, teaching, and community engagement. Scholars of color and members of groups that have been traditionally underrepresented are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements:  Terminal degree in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Writing Studies, Professional or Technical Writing, or related field. Candidates must have a terminal degree in hand by August 2021.
