Assistant Professor in English

INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut is pleased to invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of English at the tenure-track rank of Assistant Professor whose research or creative work and teaching would contribute to various writing initiatives within and beyond the department. We invite applications from scholars and writers with expertise in a number of possible fields, such as Writing Studies, including digital writing, professional writing, and/or multi-modal writing; the rhetorics and literacies of race, and antiracist pedagogies; ecocriticism, nature writing, and environmental justice; creative non-fiction; and editing and publishing.

UConn’s English department features a vibrant Creative Writing program; a new interdisciplinary Writing Studies minor; a new curriculum in First-Year Writing; a robust Writing Center; strong, state-wide connections across writing programs at five UConn campuses (Storrs, Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury); the Aetna Endowed Chair in Writing; a dedicated committee on undergraduate writing instruction; the long-standing Connecticut Writing Project; and an expansive Early College Experience (ECE) dual credit writing network. Our dynamic Ph.D. program in English supports graduate students involved in literary studies, writing studies, creative writing, and writing program administration and research. The English Department works actively with interdisciplinary programs across campuses, including the Africana Studies Institute, American Studies, the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, El Instituto, the Human Rights Institute, Judaic Studies, Medieval Studies, and the Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, among others. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship, and share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Completion of Ph.D. or MFA is expected by the date of appointment. Teaching assignment will consist of four courses per year. The successful candidate will work with undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to support our writing programs, broadly conceived.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in English or other relevant field, or an MFA (with a focus on creative non-fiction). Degree in hand by time of appointment.
  • A robust research/creative agenda as evidenced by publications in their fields.
  • A strong record of scholarship, creative work, or publication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Scholarship or publication in anti-racist research, writing, or pedagogy and/or environmental rhetorics and literacies.
  • Record of innovative pedagogy, including environmental justice or anti-racism pedagogy.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary pedagogy.
  • Experience with public engagement.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month tenured appointment with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2021. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
