Assistant, Associate, or Professor of French (Applied Linguistics)

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Furman University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor of French, effective August 2021. Located in Greenville, SC, Furman University is a nationally-ranked liberal arts college which aspires to become a leader among its peer institutions in making meaningful and lasting progress in responding to the needs and concerns of people of color and women. Ph.D. in French Applied Linguistics or related field preferred by August 1, 2021; ABD considered. Specialty open. We would be especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated research expertise in sociolinguistics and discursive analysis with a focus on the interconnections of race, place, language and identity, particularly in the post-colonial setting. Cross-disciplinary intersections with our existing minor programs in African American and Diaspora Cultures, Poverty Studies, and/or Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies a plus. Native or near-native fluency in French and English and prior teaching experience required. Candidates must demonstrate scholarly potential as well as commitment to and excellence in undergraduate instruction at all levels of French language and linguistics or related field. They must be dedicated mentors, enthusiastic study away directors, and energetic contributors to The Furman Advantage (https://www.furman.edu/furman-advantage/). The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.

Teaching load is five courses per year. Responsibilities include directing study abroad; involvement in co-curricular activities; teaching first-year seminars; offering interdisciplinary courses that contribute to other programs (e.g. linguistics, gender and women’s studies, teaching licensure, etc.); pursuing an active research agenda; advising and mentoring; and university service.
