Assistant Professor, Global Literatures in English

Background: The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22, with a specialty in the Anglophone literatures of either Africa, South Asia, the Pacific, or the Caribbean. Strengths in postcolonial and decolonial studies; indigenous studies; critical refugee studies; migration studies; environmental justice; slavery studies; the intimacies of race, gender, and sexuality; or new logics of global connection, interchange, and solidarity are particularly welcome. The successful candidate will join an intellectual community with existing strengths in South Asian, Asian American, Latinx, African American, and Caribbean literatures – as well as interdisciplinary foci in textual studies and the digital humanities, gender and queer theory, modernism/modernity, and critical race theory – and a university that has made social justice central to its vision. For more information about the Department, please visit our website at www.luc.edu/english.

This search is part of a University-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines). Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. International scholars are welcome to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities: The position involves teaching undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses in our MA and PhD programs. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a strong program of scholarship, and to engage in service at the department level or above.

Minimum Qualifications: The candidate will have a PhD in English or a closely related field, or have a plan in place to defend by May 2021. Candidates for the position must demonstrate clear potential for excellence in research and teaching and must be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic education.

Special Instructions to Applicants: Candidates should submit a cover letter and a current Curriculum Vitae to www.careers.luc.edu. After an initial round of review, selected candidates will be asked to submit additional materials: (1) a writing sample; (2) a statement on teaching experience; and (3) a statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to mentoring a diverse student body through research, teaching, and other channels and engaging a diverse community through scholarship and service. At that stage, candidates will also be asked to arrange for three recommendations from individuals prepared to speak to their professional qualifications for this position to be submitted electronically to the above website (letter writers will receive an electronic prompt from LUC).

For full consideration, cover letter and curriculum vitae should be submitted by December 21, 2020.

LUC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to our mission of social justice and transformative education. The University believes that broad diversity is critical to achieving its mission. Therefore, in holistically assessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual’s record that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, we seek candidates who will contribute to our strategic plan to deliver a transformative education in the Jesuit tradition.
