"Medieval Studies and Race" Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Humanities

The Department of English, the Program in Medieval Studies, and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities at Brown University invite applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Humanities in "Medieval Studies and Race."

We seek to appoint an exceptional scholar of Middle English literature and language (additional medieval languages a plus), whose research is well informed by the cultural, theoretical, and pedagogical issues of race.  Ideally, this scholar's teaching and research will examine relations between traditional Medieval Studies of Europe and the urgent problems of race in America today.

The Fellow will be expected to teach one course per semester on topics in Medieval Studies with a special emphasis on race; of these, at least one course per year should engage literature in Middle English.  Courses will be cross-listed in the English Department, the Medieval Studies Program, and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities. In addition, the Fellow will be expected to attend and participate in weekly Fellows seminars at the Cogut Institute, and to present a work-in-progress once during each academic year of their residency.  

Applicants must have received a Ph.D. from an institution other than Brown within the last five (5) years.  Receipt of the Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment.  Salary is $61,500 the first year with an increase to $63,907 the second year, plus benefits and a research budget of $2,000 per year.
