Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities

The School of Humanities at the University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities. Area of specialization is open, but only candidates who are demonstrated Digital Humanities (DH) scholars with expertise in fields taught in School of Humanities (SoH) programs — English, History, Philosophy, and Religion — will be considered. Successful candidates will be expected to apply for major grants to support their work and DH programming, and serve in a consulting role for SoH faculty and students working in the Digital Humanities.

 

The most diverse public university in the state of Mississippi, the University of Southern Mississippi is a student-centered research university located in the “hub” city of Hattiesburg, only 90 miles away from historic sites in New Orleans, Jackson, Mobile, Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

 

Responsibilities will include a 2/2 load teaching DH courses and classes in candidate's area of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate level—including surveys. The position includes an extensive consulting/advisory role for SoH faculty and student DH projects and DH programming. It may also include summer consulting with additional compensation. Faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda. Promise of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service are expected.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in English, History, Philosophy, or Religion by time of appointment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated ability in multiple DH skills including but not limited to text analysis, mapping, digital exhibits, network analysis, data mining, and digital documentary editing.

Preferred Qualifications: A record of publication and scholarship, excellence in teaching, and commitment to diversity of service in DH and area of specialization.
